The School Town of Highland’s Food Service Department has been very busy this summer!

First and foremost, they are extremely proud to have served over 3,200 free summer meals to the community’s youth since May 28, 2024.

This program is open to any child 18 and younger, and they have the option to go to either Johnston Elementary School for breakfast and lunch or Merkley Elementary School just for lunch. All that they have to do is eat the meal on-site - the children do not even need to be Highland residents to get some food.

Parents are encouraged to come with their children as well. While their child enjoys the provided meal, there are typically some games out and available to play allowing for some fun family time.

A schedule for the free meals program - which runs until July 25, 2024 - is pictured below and linked here. You can see the Merkley lunch menu for July below as well.

Next, in order to aid in providing meals to the community, the Food Service Department just recently wrapped our freezer van, also pictured below, with a design that encapsulates the diversity of our schools and their emphasis on providing quality fruits and vegetables to the children.

This freezer van currently helps a lot with bringing meals to the Lincoln Community Center so that kids attending summer camps there can have a nutritious meal during the day as well. It is also used to help transport products amongst schools and, now that it is wrapped, will certainly promote all the great things that the Department is doing for youth in our community.
