The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple choice test used to measure cognitive development among children and is used to identify students for the district's high ability program. Highland gives the CogAT to Kindergarten, 2nd and 5th grade students.

The CogAT is made up of three sections (batteries): the Verbal Battery, the Quantitative Battery and the Nonverbal Battery. These batteries are designed to assess specific reasoning skills in each area that correlate strongly to academic success. More specifically, the CogAT measures cognitive development, the ability to learn new tasks and problem solving abilities.
