The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is a standardized test administered by the College Board and cosponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC). Approximately 3.5 million students take the test each year, including our high school's juniors.

The PSAT focuses on the skills and knowledge at the heart of education. They'll measure what you learn in high school and what you need to succeed in college. It assesses Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing.

The PSAT is a great primer for the SAT, and even the ACT. A student's scores on the PSAT can provide our teachers with valuable information on areas where a student is excelling and where the student might need additional help.

While PSAT scores are not a factor (like the SAT and ACT) in college admissions decisions, a good performance on the PSAT is important because good cores can lead to National Merit Scholarships and scores can indicate performance on the SAT.

The PSAT 8/9 is the first in the College Board's SAT Suite of Assessments and is given to our high school's 9th grade students. The purpose of the PSAT 8/9 is to establish a starting point in terms of college and career readiness as students transition to high school.

The PSAT has three testing areas: Reading, Writing and Language and Math.

The SAT includes a Math and Evidence-Based Reading and Writing portion, plus an optional Essay.
